Sindhi Seyal Phulka is a traditional Sindhi dish that combines the flavors of spices and bread. It is a popular recipe in the Sindhi cuisine, which originates from the Sindh region of Pakistan and is also widely enjoyed in parts of India.
Ingredients for preparation:- 4-5 phulkas (Indian bread)
- 2 medium-sized onions, finely chopped
- 2 medium-sized tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
- Cooking oil
- Heat some oil in a pan or kadhai over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) and stir for a few seconds
- Add the finely chopped onions to the pan and sauté them until they turn golden brown
- Next, add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell of ginger-garlic disappears
- Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they become soft and mushy
- Now, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes
- Break the phulkas into bite-sized pieces and add them to the pan. Gently mix everything so that the masala coats the phulkas evenly
- Sprinkle some water over the phulkas and cover the pan. Allow it to cook for 5-7 minutes on low heat. The phulkas will absorb the flavors of the masala
- After 5-7 minutes, remove the lid and give it a gentle mix. Check the consistency and adjust the water as per your preference. If it appears too dry, you can sprinkle a little more water
- Finally, sprinkle garam masala over the dish and give it a final mix. Cook for another minute or two
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves
Sindhi Seyal Phulka is often enjoyed with plain yogurt or raita, which helps balance the spices and adds a cool and refreshing element to the meal. It is a satisfying and wholesome dish that showcases the rich culinary heritage of the Sindhi community.
Whether you prepare it for a special occasion or as a comforting meal at home, Sindhi Seyal Phulka offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors that will surely leave you craving for more.
